Diary of a Cow Painting

I was given a commission to paint some cows and thought I would keep a blog of its progress.

My own web-site is at www.tomscanlon.co.uk.

The blank canvas is 70 cm x 90 cm.

This is the image that will be painted.

Set-up in my little atelier.

Mess on the floor.

More mess!

Mixing acrylics for the background candy-pink (10 mins to dry on canvas).

Close-up of acrylic dollops.

Candy-pink mixture and palette knife (chib).

Old tea-towels used as deposits for unused paint.

Partially-filled candy-pink background using acrylics. Gives warm, summery tinge to painting.

Island of white.

Almost there!

Pretty in pink!

Thin charcoal sticks for painting cowtlines. One man and his dug in the Scottish cold outside.

Carbon close-up.

Outline sketch in charcoal.

Another view. Left-hand cow (Marguerite) will be modified.

No.1 cow head - her name is Mathilde.

Next up we have (left to right) Fleur and Paquerette.

Left-hand cow (Marguerite) has a new visage.

Oily dollops for cow-hides on throw-away palette.

Dollops, rainbow mess and a partial foot.

Box of colour.
